What truly is a poem?
A question I cannot truly face.
What is it to express in a short
Amount of words, a few short
Stanzas that emit my intention?
What truly is the word
To describe thee who knows how
To combine phrases in an intended way
That summons emotion, evokes thought,
Insights rhythm and a beat of the heart.
What truly is a poem?
What does it mean to be poetic?
Is it that I rhyme the words that flatter
To prescribe a pulse that will patter
To your heart’s deepest desire?
No, I do not believe that is all that a poem is.
For I believe that poetry is the true ability to
express a thought in a short time frame;
A limited stanza that allows for not only
A convoluted sense of space,
But for a restricted margin
Of thought.
A poem is to find the elusive words that
Express, emit, portray
The most complex thoughts
Into an “easy to read”
Format.
A poem is for those
Of the greatest intelligence
Who don’t require a prose
To translate thy deepest ideas.
And to us, poems are the
Lifeblood that transmit
Beauty in a verse.
Intimacy in a stanza.
Intricacy in a rhythm.
